King Edward the Seventh
The past quarter of a century has w^
the appearance of a new series ot roy^ biographies, based officially upon unrestricted access to all material in tne royal archives, and elsewhere. Edward the Seventh, to whom that treatment has now been applied at last by Sir Philip Magnus, died more than a half century ago; Sir Sidney Lee was not privileged to see much of the material which Sir Philip has used; and it is no longer held to be necessary to conceal what could not be revealed in a former climate of opinion and when so many of the King's contemporaries were alive.
Sir Philip Magnus has enjoyed the additional advantage of unrestricted access to collections of papers and documents which are still in private hands or privately controlled. And no one could be better qualified to make the best of the unique opportunity than the skilled biographer of Gladstone and Kitchener. King Edward is exhibited as man, prince and king, with many admirable qualities and with a number of defects.
Sir Philip's exposition of the unparalleled rigour and ambition of the educational experiment to which the Prince was submitted—a vicarious atonement for the wickedness of George IV—provides a vital clue to the subsequent course of his life
The King's influence upon policy, and the impact which he made upon his age, are discussed fully by Sir Philip after years of research and of consideration of all the evidence. The result is a magnificent full scale portrait of a memorable personahty, and a brilliant and absorbing study of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
