Bird Families of the World presents in realistic illustrations and readable text not only every living bird family but every extinct-bird family as well. Since the earliest known bird, the Archaeop-teryx, evolutionary change has been responsible for the emergence of over 8,000 different species that are alive today. These species have been classified into 176 families, which are significant because they each contain birds thought to have evolved from a single common ancestor. By basing this book on a consideration of these families, it has been possible not only to describe every important type of bird but also to treat birds of little-known regions such as equatorial forests as completely as those that are to be seen in suburban gardens.
Some fifty ornithologists from every part of the world have contributed entries on their specialties. As a result, the book contains up-to-date information and even material yet to be published in more formal academic works.

Almost half of this attractive volume is taken up by illustrations of every major type of bird, and all the birds are depicted in characteristic postures, just as they appear in life. In addition, many smaller drawings illustrate specific points mentioned in the text.
Ad Cameron started to draw birds at an early age in his native Holland. He attended the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and in 1969 held his first exhibition of drawings of birds. Cameron has traveled throughout Western and Eastern Europe, as well as Ethiopia, in order to watch and draw birds in their natural habitats. Dr. C. J. O. Harrison is a member of the Subdepartment of Ornithology at the British Museum (Natural History).
