PREFACE
Research activities in the Central Research Institute for Physics continued throughout 1973 to be centred on topics in those areas which had already been successfully explored in previous years. Th us our investigations primarily covered specific problems arising in particle and nuclear physics, solid state physics and chemistry, nuclear energetics and computer techniques.
A noteworthy feature last year Was the initiation of the active involvement in biophysical and medical research; the application of the advanced measuring techniques developed within the Institute for other purposes appears to show considerable promise in the two Hew spheres of interest. The correlation technique worked out for the analysis of reactor noise could well prove to be a useful tool in, for example, phonocardiography and it is certain that biologists concerned with the determination of biopotentials will be most appreciative of the reliable meters designed for the measurement of extremely small currents. Our expertise in spectroscopy, automatics and computer techniques can be exploited for the automation of routine clinical analyses, thus, the great success of the automatic blood analyser, one of our Institute's exhibits at the 1973 Budapest International Fair. It has now been realized that the precise measuring methods and experimental procedures of physics and chemistry must be introduced in biology and medicine and that one must not ignore the way of thinking (formulation of the problem, model building, quantitative approach, etc.) characteristically adopted in physics (and perhaps in mathematics). All over the world the boundaries of different disciplines and their interrelationships - even if traditionally far from each other - are now being intensely explored. However, the present tendency of some of our researchers to cooperate with biologists and physicians in the solution of given problems means no more than their wanting to make a useful contribution with some of their results in computerization, physics, chemistry and Vissza
