Thomas Csordas's eloquent analysis of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal answers one of the primary callings of anthropology: to stimulate critical reflection by making the exotic seem familiar and the familiar appear strange. In examining the movement's growth and diversification over the course of 30 years, Csordás offers insights into the contemporary nature of rationality, the transformation of space and time in Charismatic daily life, gender discipline, the blurring of boundaries between ritual and everyday life, the sense of community forged through shared ritual participation, and the creativity of language and metaphor in prophetic utterance. Charisma, Csordás proposes, is a collective self-process, located not in the personality of a leader, but in the rhetorical resources mobilized by participants in ritual performance.

THOMAS J. CSORDÁS is Armington Professor of Anthropology and Religion at Case Western Reserve University and author of Body/Meaning/Healing (Palgrave, 2002),^ and The Sacred Self: A Cultural Phenomenology of Charismatic Healing (California, 1994).
"At stake here are enormously complex and consequential questions about the generation of a sense of the sacred .and, ultimately, about the relationship between language and experience. [Language, Charisma, and Creativity] will be of interest to a wide audience in anthropological linguistics, religion, and psychological and medical anthropology." -anthropological linguistics
"A finely detailed account .that expandís] understandings of charismatic movements and offers insight into the social and personal dimensions of how a charismatic experience is produced." -american ethnologist
"With its emphasis on ritual and performance this book offers a new framework for sociologists interested in social movements. The phenomenological and semiotic approaches that inform parts of this analysis are still relatively unintegrated into sociological analyses, and Csordás shows us part of what they can offer for understanding current cultural transformations."
-american journal of sociology -
