TOULOUSE - LAUTREC
by Edouard Julien
Among the artists who lent distinction to «La Belle Epoque», the latter years of the nineteenth century, is Toulouse-Lautrec. This decade, which proved extraordinarily rich in the arts, saw the flowering of a whole new school of bold and creative painters who, inspired by the example of Delacroix and Courbet, revolutionized the traditional techniques of drawing and painting. Among such contemporaries as Manet, Monet, Renoir, Gauguin and Van Gogh, the figure of Toulouse-Lautrec stands out in striking relief.

After forsaking a world of wealth and society to which he was born, lie found independence, scope and fulfillment in the gaudy music halls, bars and cafés of Montmartre. It was there that he drew liis inspiration and discovered those models whom he immortalized by capturing the theatrical atmosphere of the gaslight era. Even before his early death, stories of his debauches among those who made up the dregs of Paris after dark tended to obscure the real facts ofhis life and career. His drawings, paintings, lithographs and posters did not receive the recognition due Lautrec as one of the great artists of all time for almost half a century. Edouard Julien, curator of Lautrec's works in the Museum in Albi, has dedicated himself to painting a true portrait of liis illustrious compatriot in which both his life and art are carefully analyzed.
This volume includes a discriminating selection of the artist's most characteristic works, including 45 paintings in color, as well as 33 drawings and lithographs which make this the definitive work on the master of Montmartre.
