Nunquam
LAWRENCE DURRELL
An author's note in the best-selling Tunc said that it was intended to be 'the first deck of a double-decker novel'. Nunquam (Never) is the complementary novel, the second deck. The lives of the chief characters continue—for one or two of them, are even extended—but their relationships are transformed. Nunquam is another story, the unpredictable development of Lawrence Durrell's 'shadow-play'.
From the opening scenes in the Paulhaus, the Firm's psychiatric nursing home in Switzerland where Felix is recovering with Benedicta near at hand; on to England where Julian's obsession, a model of the Athenian film star lolanthe, is being built and programmed; to Greece and Turkey and back to England and the climax in St. Paul's Cathedral, this is Durrell at his most gothic and comic, his most bawdily gruesome, and his most widely allusive.
A personal letter at the end of the book explains cheerfully that he has 'tried to play about with the notion of culture'—there is no doubt of that, and his characters' ideas are as tantalizing as his ways of storytelling.
It is hard to pick out from this very strange story the parts made most memorable by his writing, but perhaps the triumph lies in the behaviour of the scientists' toy as, endowed with full memory, she/it is brought to speaking, breathing and highly mobile 'life'.
No reader of Tunc, and no reader of Justine and the other three novels of The Alexandria Quartet, should miss reading Nunquam. Vissza
