"The anxiety among high school students went beyond political uncertainties and pregraduation jitters. The fourth-year students were on strike. For seven days, they occupied the streets. They wanted me to join them in opposing the government's attempt to reintroduce compulsory final examinations at almost the same time as college entrance exams. The strike surprised us school principals. We saw the reintroduction of a final examination as the return of something from the time when portraits of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria-Hungary hung in the classrooms, a demanding rite of passage, a kind of proof that a person had matured."
