Learning to Dream describes the emergence of a new generation of British film-makers determined to create a vibrant national cinema. It argues that such films as Bill Forsyth's Comfort and joy
Neil jordan's The Company of Wolves, Michael Radford's 1984 and Roland joffe's The Killing Fields reflect promising new ideas and visions. It also raises the spectre that the new hope could soon become another wasted opportunity. Film financiers are too concerned with success in the American market.
They are often unwilling to take a risk with new ideas. There is little understanding of the difference between cinema and television.
