ERNEST HEMINGWAY was a legend in his own lifetime. His was the most exciting life, both literary and personal, of any American writer in the twentieth century. Although much has been written of his life and motivations, very little has come from anyone close to him. "I'd üke somebody who really knew me to write about me sometime," Ernest Hemingway once remarked to his younger brother, Leices-ter. "Maybe you'll be the one, Báron."
Leicester Hemingway, himself a magaziné writer and novelist, has the opportunity—in-deed, one might say the obligation—to give those who did not know his brother, or who knew him imperfectly, somé insight into his life and character. In this biography, three years in the writing, Leicester Hemingway provides a revealing and intimate account of the man behind the legend. From his special vantage point, he presents reminiscences, con-versations, anecdotes, and events which will prove not only fascinating to Hemingway ad-mirers, but invaluable to Hemingway... Tovább

From his special vantage point, he presents reminiscences, con-versations, anecdotes, and events which will prove not only fascinating to Hemingway ad-mirers, but invaluable to Hemingway scholars.
"Papa," as Ernest Hemingway came to be known to millions, lived as he died—dramati-cally. He lived with bullfighters, boxed with world champions, hunted and fished somé of the biggest game, and reported the sights, sounds, smells of war as few writers ever have. That he was one of those rare humán beings— a truly free, creative man—is undeniable. He won both the Pulitzer prize and the Nobel prize for literature. His novels and short stories have been translated all over the world. The literary style he created has been imitated but never matched.
This biography penetrates the public profilé of Hemingway, exploring his relationships with his parents, relatives, friends, and writers. From the many personal glimpses which Leicester (continued on back flap)
(continued from front flap) Hemingway provides, it is possible to see and understand the circumstances which prompted so many of the familiar Hemingway responses, and the experiences from which he derived material for his novels and stories. No other living writer could provide the rich materials of which this portrait is composed. This book alsó contains over forty photographs, many of which have never been published.
Leicester Hemingway was born in 1915, in Oak Park, Illinois. He has been a newspaper reporter, photo editor, and boát builder. Like his brother he has known war in its many aspects, is an ardent hunter and big-game fish-erman and world traveler. In recent years he has done extensive free-lance magaziné writing. His növel, Sound of the Trumpet, was published in 1953. He lives on his boát in Caribbean waters with his wife, the former Doris Dun-ning, and their two children.
