LIBERALISM
In this book, John Gray provides an account of liberalism —its nature, its origins and its prospects in the modern world. Historically, though it had antecedents in ancient times, liberalism is shown to be the political theory of modernity—the project of theorising political institutions for the government of an individualist society. John Gray has been Fellow and Tutor in Politics at Jesus College, Oxford since 1976. His books include Mill on Liberty: A Defence, Hayek on Liberty and Conceptions of Liberty in Political Philosophy (Co-edited with Z A Pelczynski).
Research for this book was conducted when the author was resident as Distinguished Research Fellow at the Social Philosophy and Policy Center, Bowling Green State University.
