One of the most influential figures in Western art, '// divino Michelangelo' left an impressive written record of his thoughts and activities.
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), as well as being a sculptor, architect, and painter of genius, was a poet and letter-writer of remarkable accomplishment. This selection of his letters and poetry also includes the Life, the biography written by Michelangelo's pupil, Ascanio Condivi.
Many ofthe letters are to famous contemporaries such as Vasari and Duke Cosimo, and they are characterized by unaffected directness. The poems explore, among other subjects, Michelangelo's attitudes towards his art, including the painting ofthe Sistine Chapel.
