George Lukács is an unusualíy difficult ^ writer to assess and explain. In this wide-ranging and perceptive átudy, George Lichtheim places him among the major theorists of literature and aesthetics; and yeY he can point to a time when Lukács seerfied like a man who had removed part of his brain and replaced it by slogans. He analyses Lukács' life as well as his work (they are unusually closely combined in this writer) and places both in the political and intellectual currents-the revolutions and counter-revolutions - of twentieth-century Europe.
