"This play might be described as 'Sade seen through women's eyes,'" writes Yukio Mishima in his postface to his fascinating play. Mishima had become intrigued by the riddle of why the Marquis' wife, who remained devoted to him through all the years of his wild misadventures and imprisonments, decided to leave him at the very moment he regained his freedom after the French Revolution. Although based on history, various facts in the play have been altered to suit the author's dramatic purpose. While Sade himself never appears, he is an omnipresent specter: Mishima has said that he tried to place Madame de Sade at the center of his all-female drama, but in another sense the real center is Sade himself, and it is around him, and his off-stage actions, that the drama revolves and coalesces.

Yukio Mishima, "the best-known and most popular Japanese novelist today" (Library Journal), was born in 1925. A brilliant student, he embarked on a career in the government ministry in 1947, the same year he began writing. A year later he had finished his first novel. Sincp then he has written sixteen novels (eleven of which have been made into films), two travel books, and many plays. The first novel to be published in this country in translation was Sound of Waves, 1956, which has been followed by many other novels and short stories. Mishima lives in Tokyo with his wife and two children.
