Jtockholm is built in a very individual and distinctive ^ landscape of rocks, ridges, islands and water. At first ^^ sight the city may seem difficult to comprehend and elusive- but it has a pattern which can be read in its streets, squares and buildings. In these the changing city planning and architectural ideas of the different centuries are clearly discernible. Like the annual rings on the oaks in the Djurgar-den Royal Park - many of which are as old as Stockholm itself - the City gradually grew as the years passed: the grid-pattern plan of the inner-City, the garden city developments, the post-war multi-family housing suburbs, and the building activity of our own times. Stockholm has grown as annual rings round the medieval core of the Old Town.
In words and photographs the aim of Stockholm's Annual Rings is to help the reader to interpret the City's patterns and to act as a guide to both its past and its present.

The book was produced by the City of Stockholm for the 1998 Cultural Capital of Europe Year.
The text was written by Secretary Magnus Andersson from the City Planning Administration, the principal photographer was Nino Monastra and the English translation is by William M. Pardon. Vissza
