F. Scott Fitzgerald was utterly committed to, and lived totally within his own era, the "Jazz Age." Yet, in his time, few critics took him seriously. The Great Gatsby, now regarded as the définitive novel of its period, was at first called "a glorified anecdote" and dismissed as "a book of the season."
