Around 1900, objects as varied as houses and hatpins appeared in a style of swirling shapes and sinuous lines. As the name implies, Art Nouveau designers were consciously attempting to create an entirely new style for the new century. Art Nouveau decoration expresses the preoccupations of society at that time: sometimes the style reflects a new, dynamic image of Nature that modern science hod revealed; at other times, it suggests the hothouse sensuality of the age that produced Freud. Among its heroes are, on the one hand, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the founding fathers of modern architecture and design, and, on the other, René Lalique, whose exquisite jewellery rivals the work of Renaissance goldsmiths.
Art Nouveau, the second title in the Collectors'Style Gw/cfei series, provides an analysis of the style's many variations across Europe and America. Illustrated with examples of recently sold items, and with sections on glass, ceramics, jewellery, metalwork, furniture, sculpture, prints and posters, it is essential pocket reference for all buyers of decorative arts of this period.
The Collectors'Style Guides are researched from the most up-to-date saleroom information in the UK, Europe and the United States, and offer a cross-section of collecting opportunities from under L50 to a top limit of L1000 -but mostly concentrated at the affordable end of the spectrum. The objects are set in historical context, with an analysis of style and motifs, and each eapter has a reference section giving details of price, rarity and quality.
