About the series

The Making of the Past
The Mailing of the Past is a new series designed to provide a complete survey of the early history of the world as revealed by archaeology and related disciphnes. Its subject is a new history, the making of a new past, freshly uncovered and reconstructed in recent years by skilled specialists. Beautifully illustrated with photographs, many in full colour, and with maps, diagrams and line drawings including reconstructions, the series will be completely authoritative and up to date, while, losing nothing of the excitement of recent discoveries about the ancient past.

About this volume
Man before History
John Waechter

Man before History - the story of early man - is an account of the origins and development of man in Africa and elsewhere. The author begins by outlining the growth of interest in prehistory in Victorian times, intensified by the impact of Darwin's evolutionary theories and by the forgeries and misinterpretations of finds, in particular the famous Piltdown episode. He goes on to examine the variety of means by which the archaeologist approaches the study of prehistory, obtaining evidence from the world of science, from modern techniques of dating, from skilful interpretation of excavated material and from the observation of present-day parallels to early man's lifestyle. The development of man, from his first recognizable ancestors to homo sapiens, is related by an account of discoveries of early hominids all over the world. This is accompanied by the story of man's progress in the art of tool-making, as related to archaeological finds. A closing chapter looks at man's artistic achievements, describes surviving cave paintings,
(continued on the back Jiap)
engravings and sculpture, and presents some of the many interpretations suggested for prehistoric art. Four visual stories describe in words and pictures the author's excavations at Swanscombe in Kent, the work of the Leakeys at Olduvai Gorge in Africa, the evolution of the hominids and the art of cave painting.
About the author
Dr Waechter is Senior Lecturer in Prehistoric Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University of London. He has excavated sites in the Middle East, Turkey, Gibraltar, East Africa (Olduvai), the Sudan and the United Kingdom and has written extensively for learned journals. Vissza
