The problem of ethics and moral values is the main concern of this wide-ranging and stimulating book. Erich Fromm argues that psychology cannot be divorced from ethics, and that it has a responsibility to frame objective standards of conduct. Fromm follows Jung in recognizing the importance of the moral factor in psychiatry, but goes beyond Jung in proposing a new system of ethics on a scientific basis.
Erich Fromm studied sociology and psychology at the Universities of Heidelberg, Frankfurt and Munich, and was trained in psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytical Institute in Berlin. After 1926 he devoted himself to consultant psychology and theoretical investigation. He was a Terry Lecturer at Yale University, and lectured at Columbia, Bennington, the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, and the National University of Mexico.
