Little can Peter Minuit have known, when he purchased the land from the Manhattan Indians in 1626, that this rocky, marsh-covered strip of land that was Manhattan would one day command some of the highest land prices on earth; that where the island rose a matter of feet above the waters of the East and Hudson rivers there would soar huge steel and concrete towers; or that the modest little town of New Amsterdam, as Minuit called it, would one day swell into possibly the world's greatest, most vibrant and disparate metropolis.
Manhattan island is often taken to mean New York City, and the mistake is understandable.
