The Literature of the United States is intended as a general introduction to the main themes and figures of the American literary scene, from colonial times to the present day. To some extent it treats literature as an expression of American character and experience. Thus the problems faced by American writers as Americans are stressed throughout. Noting the unfortunate division between American and European literary qualities, the author regards the decreasing emphasis on this division as a sign of American cultural maturity.
