The title, as the whole argumentation of this book by the late Maria Ujházy, Associate Professor of American Literature at the English Department of the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, is an intellectual challenge. With a thorough knowledge of Melville's totál oeuvre, and a critical survey of Melville criticism, Maria Ujházy offers a penetrating analysis of MobyDick not by discussing the physical from the viewpoint of the metaphysical but by examining the aesthetically specific from the angle of the social. Her keen scrutiny and incisive intelligence have achieved a breakthrough in international Melville research which is bound to attract the attention of scholars and students of American literature, of literary aesthetics and of theological exegesis alike.
