The title, as the whole argumentation of this book by the late Maria Ujházy, Associate Professor of American Literature at the English Department of the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, is an intellectual challenge. It is indicative of the basic concept of the author, who considers Melville a prominent exponent of American critical realism rather than a romantic lost in nebulous metaphysical speculation. Focussing her attention on life as it was really lived, Maria Ujházy is able not only to highlight the Melvillean manner of creating imaginative types of universal significance in Moby-Dick, but alsó to unravel the enigmatic mission of Captain Ahab, to interpret his obsessive struggle with the White Whale, and to illuminate the secular meaning of his religious torment.
