Beyond Basics provides a cogent survey of research questions and related pedagogical issues central to TESOL. Intended as a complement to the ever-popular Teaching English as a Second orForeign Language, the text aims to help ESL/EFL teachers bridge the gap between language teaching and second language research.
Beyond Basics offers a theoretical—as opposed to methodological—overview of language teaching. Its ten specially commissioned papers are divided into five sections, each of which applies the findings of researchers to the broad-based concerns of ESOL teachers:
• "The Learner" presents research on attitűdé and motivation and cognitive aspects of second language learning
• "The Learner's Language" reviews research on second language acquisition and interlanguage analysis and shows how these areas have contributed to our understanding of how second languages develop

• "The Research Process" presents an introduction to carrying out research in second language acquisition and covers language testing from the point of view of the researcher and the teacher
• "The Implementation Process" shows how language policy and bilingual education, two areas of research, have integrated existing research and put it into practice
Ali sections of Beyond Basics contain an introduction by the editor and two papers. Each paper is followed by discussion questions, suggested activities for the pre- or in-service teacher, annotated suggestions for further reading, and a bibliography.
Beyond Basics strikes a happy médium between the methods text for beginning teachers-in-training and the reference volume aimed at researchers in second language acquisition. The text may be used in graduate teacher-training programs in TESOL or Applied Linguistics, or may serve as a classroom reference for in-service teachers who want to keep up with research that relates specifically to language teaching and language learning.
