A distinguished rank is due to
the Spanish collection of the
Budapest Museum of Fine Arts
among the great galleries of the
world. Right after the Prado in
Madrid and the Hermitage in
Leningrad the Budapest collec-
tion can pride itself on having
the largest number of Spanish
masterpieces. El Greco is repre-
sented by seven paintings, from
The Magdalene, painted in Titian's
style, to the soul-stirring com-
position The Agony in the Garden;
Velázquez by an early genre
painting of the series of bodegones
entitled The Breakfast; Zurbarán
by S. Andrew and by his Purisima
of lyrical tone. The period is
closed by a painting, each, of
Ribera, Mazo and Murillo. The
art of Goya, this pioneer of
modern painting, is represented
by five works with the world-fa-
mous Water-Carrier among them.
These magnificent products of
Spanish painting, preserved in
Budapest, are introduced to the
reader with great artistic acumen,
