THE OXFORD-HACHETTE FRENCH DICTIONARY
Edited by Marie-Hélene Corréard and Valerie Grundy
This ground-breaking new dictionary meets the highest standards of comprehensiveness, reliabihty, and accessibility. It is the first ever French and English dictionary to be based on the evidence of electronic databases of current language.
Oxford Electronic Texts
The use of corpus material is the most important innovation of the Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary, distinguishing it from all other bilingual dictionaries available today.
The compilation of the dictionary was based on two electronic text collections, one French and one English, each containing over ten million words. These are collections of both printed and transcribed spoken material, held in electronic form in a computer. Corpus contents range from the texts of books, newspapers, magazine articles, leaflets and letters, to transcripts of conversations, lectures and discussions. The computer can locate all the occurrences of a particular word in the corpus, and makes a concordance of that word which allows the lexicographer to see exactly how the word is used and to determine its semantic and syntactic contexts.
By using this consensus view of how a word behaves, the compiler can eliminate quirks of language and record only the most frequent forms of a word with the appropriate translation. In the compilation of The Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary, the corpus was used to analyse over 350,000 words and phrases. In this way the dictionary reflects everybody's use of language rather than that of one particular editor, making it the truest representation of both languages compiled to date.
