Martin Kers, Landscape photographer
Martin Kers was born on April 8th 1944 in Rijsoord, a village on the Waal. The riverbanks, the high dike and the flat polder behind it were the playground of his youth. Later on he completed his artistic education at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and took a job in an advertising agency.
His need to express himself visually was great. Alongside his everyday work photography began to grow in importance. The magical reality of nature and the silent landscape of his youth were the greatest inspirations to his photography. Although Martin Kers has been taking pictures since he was sixteen, photography, until recently, was always his hobby.
The breakthrough came for Martin Kers with the publication of the Photographic Art Calender®, "Holland" in 1984 and of the now famous mini-calender "Holland".
His work also became renowned as a result of commissions from publications such as Libelle, Grasduinen, Avenue, Panorama, Holland Herald, and National Geographic as well as various exhibitions.
Most of Martin Kers' photographs are in colour since he feels that colour is essential for creating depth in his work. By setting a simple subject in a striking composition his photographs help us to see reality In a new light. In this way an everyday object can become more meaningful, for example, as a result of the angle from which it is photographed. His interest is in the stranger elements of landscape; those resulting from shape, colour, mood and rarely from photographic effects. All the photographs of Martin Kers reflect his affection for nature and landscape, and he captures their beauty convincingly. By using human elements In a scene over which the power of nature reigns, he creates contrast. His work is aesthetic and is readily appreciated.
His publications have been awarded several national and international prizes including the "Silver Camera" - 1st prize (1984), 2nd prize (1985), a 1st prize in the photography sub section of the 1986 graphic calender competition. International Kodak prize (1986) and the Prix d'Ovidlus (Europremium 1986). Vissza
