This study of the growth of a social order begins with the dark age of disintegrating tribalism in which the English began to colonize Britain. It ends with the disintegration of feudalism. During the intervening centuries, so the author shows, new ways of living and thinking which became traditional, were made possible by structural changes in society and an epoch-making expansion of agriculture and trade. This process of social evolution, in which so much human achievement was concentrated, is the central theme of the present volume. The author is Miss Marion Gibbs, Lecturer in History at the University College, Swansea. Her previous books on medieval history have been published by the Royal Historical Society and in the Oxford Historical Series.
