Bob Marley lived such a short time, but long enough for the message of his music to penetrate to the farthest corners of the world. For millions of people, from the punks of Britain to the Hava Supai Indians of the Grand Canyon, Marley was a prophet, hero and king of reggae. Self-educated and familiar with Jamaica's slums from eárly childhood, he never let himself fully adopt the role of superstar. "I handlé fame by not being famous," he laughed. "I just keep my head in a bandage [so] that it cannot swell."
Nevertheless, he left the world in no doubt of the strength and substance of his beliefs. First, as a Rude Boy in the 1960s, then as soul rebel he sang of rebellion against oppressors, and of salvation for the "downpressed". As "Rasta man", he embraced the Rastafari religion, singing praise to Jah (god) who was the driving force in his life.
