Hans and Gretel Bfiriker dream of winning the silver skates offered as first prize in the Great Race on the frozen canals of Broek in Holland. But with their clumsy wooden skates, they doubt they have a chance.
New skates are out of the question, since there's barely enough money for fuel for their tumbledown cottage hear the canal. Poverty is all Hans and Gretel have known since the night ten years ago when their father was brought home unconscious from the dikes, the night the Brinkers' hard-earned savings vanished. It's no use asking their father what happened to the thousand guilders, or where the mysterious silver watch came from.

Still, Hans and Gretel can't resist the challenge of the race, especially since they know they're the fastest skaters in Broek. Only Peter, from one of the richest families in town, is faster. Then, just before the race begins, Peter's skate strap accidentally breaks. Is this Hans's chance to win the race?
