Italian Sculpture from Prehistory to the Etruscans Italy, on account of its geographical situation, has found itself since earliest times the home of many different cultures, whose origins and structures are often wrapped in mystery. However, small sculptures which have been discovered on ancient sites can help to explain the everyday life, beliefs, customs and myths of their age. For instance, the famous Nuraghic bronzé figurines convey the essence of early Sardinian society - its haughty isolation, vigour and rigid simplicity. One of the most fascinating mysteries of antiquity surrounds the Etruscans. Who were they? What were the sources of their art? Massimo Cárrá makes the history of these ancient peoples the background to his study of their art, in particular their characteristic figurines, a selection of which can be seen in the seventy-two superb colour plates.
