For centuries, the vigor and enterprise of the Dutch have earned the awe and admiration of the world. Theirs is a tiny land, densely populated, intensively worked, and-though not more than half the size of West Virginia-a world power. From this tiny land has come also one of the world's most distinctive forms of artistic expression, produced by a succession of great talents, among whom are some of the greatest in all art. One need only think of the names of Geertgen tot Sint Jans, Lucas van Leyden, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, Hobbema, Van Ruysdael among the Old Masters-and there are many, many more. Even the myriad of lesser painters are so attractive that the vocabulary of art has had to find a special term for them: the Little Dutch Masters. Dutch painting has been avidly collected everywhere.
