MASTERPIECES OF
AMERICAN PAINTING
IN THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
by Margaretta Salinger
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has the finest collection of American paintings in the world, and this selection of one hundred masterpieces represents the highlights of the collection. Although not a general survey, the book covers painting in America from the colonial period to World War I, ending with the group of artists known as The Eight, who presaged many of the concerns of later twentieth-century art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has the finest collection of American paintings in the world, and this selection of one hundred masterpieces represents the highlights of the collection. Thirty-five of the paintings are reproduced not only in full but also with four-color details that give the viewer new insight into the artist's style.
Margaretta Salinger, the late curator emeritus, spent her long and distinguished career with the Museum in the Department of European Paintings. A well-known lecturer and the author of many catalogues and books for the Museum and other publishers, she wrote the introduction and the lively texts that accompany each reproduction. John K. Howat, who selected the paintings and contributed a foreword, is Lawrence A. Fleischmann Chairman of the Departments of American Art. Included is a selected bibliography for each painting in the book. Vissza
