Provocative and visionary, illuminating and agenda setting:
Today's masters of our Wired World speak about their visions of work and life In our Digital Age.
"Our goal is to ensure ttiat every country, every business, every individual, can benefit from tbe new digital economy - ensuring Uiat we can all be Masters of Uie Wired World." - the Rt Hon Tony Blair. Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
"As each breathtaking new development brings us closer together in communication and in common cause - building a true global electronic village - we have the chance to spread a new prosperity, a new literacy, a new love of freedom and democracy, and even a new sense of community to the farthest regions of the worid." - Al Gore, Vice President, USA
"I have always maintained that the future should be of great interest to all of us. It's where most of us will have to live. The next millennium will be, I am sure, even more amazing than the last. As a species, we are 'hard-wired' to explore our environment and our imaginaUon. We should never underestimate the capacity of our own Ingenuity to take us by surprise." - Sir Arthur C. Clarke KBE
"A Wired World demands a complete re-think and maior re-construction of society from top to bottom. It is time for societies that can hurl so much energy and creativity into technological innovaUon to devote at least a fraction of the same resources to radically rethinking the obsolete economic theories of Left and Right alike, and their effect on socieUes all across ttie planet as we move into the next millennium." - Alvin Toffler
"The Wired World is Inevitably going to be something of an exploraUon. but exploring is at the heart of learning, and of changing and of growing. That is what I believe and this is what gives me hope. The worid I see emerging, with its looser organizations, has many threats and many dangers, but it should allow more people to stop pretending much eariier in their lives. If that is so, then the Wired World and Age of Unreason may become a better worid and an Age of Greatne^." - Charles Handy
"Thereare almost no aspects of economic and social life that remain untouched. The word 'revolution' is often misused. In Uie present case, it applies perfectly: we are cleariy in the middle of a true revolution - the information revolution - and we have to learn to live with it." - Edith Cresson, Member of the European Commission
"Government has to ask itself how it can hope to make an effective Impact In such a fast-moving, dynamic and unpredictable global maricet." - The Rt Hon Peter Mandelson, MP, Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, UK Government
"The on-line economy is one of the most far-reaching devolopments of our tiipe: its borderiess nature puts in question many of the fundamental premises on which political, legal and business decisions have been based in the past. We therefore need to develop a political vision to cope with the new dimension that Is given tpjiobalization." - Dr Martin Bangemann. Member of the European Commission
a new global economy is emerging that is fundamentally driven by two things - Information and images at heart, this revolution is not fundamentally a technological revolution at all - technology is simply what makes the revolution possible, as such it's a bridge, not a destination Films, television and increasingly the images and ideas transmitted across the Internet, shape attitudes, create conventions of style and behaviour, they reinforce or undermine the wider values of society." - David Puttnam CBE
" lust as lifts have changed the shape of buildings, and cars have changed the shape of cities, bits will change the shape of organizations, be they companies, nations or social structures." - Nicholas Negroponte, Director MIT Media Laboratory
-The application of electronic transmissions is !ust beginning to be felt. How and where we are educated, where and how we work and live our health-care systems, our shops, our commerce, our reading, our leisure, no part of human enterprise will be spared. Even our notions of sovereignty and governance could be profoundly affected." - Donald J. Johnston. Secretary General. Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development . ¦
