Their application spreading to every branch of medical science - from internál medicine, generál surgery, traumatology, paediatry, sports medicine to industrial preventive medicine - has greatly aided the generál practitioner. Information obtained from these tests has led to the solution of numerous aeronautical, space, and deep-sea problems. More than ten years' experience by the authors has been used and a huge literature included. All this enables those interesled in this field to make a quick survey on pulmonary function test and on all the important questions arising in practice. In the first part an outline is given on the physiology and pathological physiology of respiration.
