During the early days of perestroika, The Irish Times sent Conor O'Clery -one of the best-known and most respected figures in Irish journalism -to open the first Irish newspaper bureau in Moscow. Conor O'Clery has been Moscow correspondent of The Irish Times since 1987. Born in Belfast, he studied at Queen's University where he won the UK award for the best student newspaper feature in 1971. After graduation in 1972, he joined The Irish Times where he worked as Northern Editor, London Editor, News Editor and roving Foreign Correspondent. He won an award for his coverage of the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1985 and was named Irish Journalist of the Year in 1988 for his reporting from Moscow. He is the author of Phrases Make History Here, a collection of Irish political quotations, published in 1986.
