In the words of the President of the Swedish Academy: 'Hemingway is one of the great authors of our time, one pf those who, honestly and undauntedly, reproduces the genuine features of the hard countenance of the age.' Perhaps Hemingway's vitality was best accounted for by himself in his message to the ceremony at which his award was made, when he said: 'For a true writer each book should be a new beginning, where he tries again for something which is beyond attainment.
