Ernest Hemingway was born at Oak Park, Illinois, on 21 July 1898. At sixteen he began to earn his own living, working as a day-labourer, farm-hand, dishwasher, and waiter. Before the United States entered the 1914-18 war Hemingway went to Francé as a volunteer in an American ambulance unit. He later enlisted in the Italian Arditi, and was badly wounded in an incident near the Austrian bordér that won him the Croce di Guerra with two citations. He afterwards re-entered newspaper work, and was for somé time a W. R. Hearst Paris correspondent. In Paris he came to krjow Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, both of whom, but particularly the latter, profoundly influenced him in forrning his characteristic style. Before he was twenty-five Hemingway was recognized as a force to be reckoned with in modern writing, and even then he had many imitators.
