Many are unusual, being family recipes which have been handed down from one generation to another, or the result of a creative temperament at work in the kitchen. Cornish churches are üke no others in these islands. Fowey and Lostwithiel would look at home in Brittany. St Germans, the originál Cornish see, is like a church in Normandy. The other old ones - 209 of them - are wholly Cornish. They help to make us realise that Cornwall is not part of England, but a separate country which still has its distinctive customs and once had its own language. As the laté Sir John Betjeman suggested, 'we must not let down the past which has cared for them for so long', but it is perhaps even more important that no opportunity is missed to enable us to pass them to future generations so that they may alsó enjoy 'that holy and ancient atmosphere which is peculiarly Cornish'. The Cornwall Historic Churches Trust was established in 1955 and its objects are simple: to raise funds in order to support schemes for the restoration and essential maintenance of churches which have special architectural or historic connections. It has no bias toward any one denomination, having supported projects in Román Catholic and Methodist as well as Church of England churches or chapels. It is a voluntary organisation relying entirely upon the generosity of its supporters. Vissza
