Less than 50 years after the Wright Brothers first took to the air, the world's first jet aircraft came into operational service. This was the Me262 jet fighter which fought against Allied bombers over Germany in 1944 and 1945. The 40 years since then have seen a dramatic revolution in the speed, sophistication and destructive power of all types of military jets. Britain and the United States led the world in aircraft development after World War II with the Gloster Meteor and the Lockheed Sabre fighters. They were soon followed by the Soviets with the MiG-15 and then nations like France and Italy.
Throughout the 1950s great improvements were made as the sound barrier was broken and designers gained knowledge of stress factors and engine construction. Many of the aircraft which first flew during that decade are still in front line service such as the F 4 Phantom and the awe-inspiring B 52 bomber.
As air defense systems have improved so jet fighters and bombers have had to become increasingly sophisticated and modern planes carry a bewildering array of electronic countermeasures, terrain following radar and automatically-guided weapons systems. The latest generation of aircraft F-15, F-16, F-18, MiG-25 and the amazing VSTOL Harrier are not only capable of wreaking as much havoc as a whole fleet of World War II planes but can do so with pin point accuracy and breathtaking speed.
The history of these apocalyptic weapons is related by Michael Taylor, an outstanding aircraft historian and contributor to the prestigious Jane's All the World's Aircraft. His writing is complemented by numerous full color photographs, many of them rare and previously unpublished. The combination of text and pictures makes Jet Warplanes a book which no aircraft buff will be able to resist. Vissza
