Educated at Queen Elizabeth's, Barnet, and The Queen's College, Oxford, Michael Tomkinson joined the British diplomatic service in 1959. An arabist, he served in Kuwait and Qatar, as Assistant Political Agent and Court Registrar, and as Press Attaché in Baghdad and Jedda, before resigning in 1968 to travel, write and photograph more freely.
His family home for the f ollo wing fifteen years was in Tunisia, in a villa on the beach near Hammamet, where he produced the eight editions of the best-selling Holiday Guide and, after several months of research in each re-spective country, returned to write his Kenya, United Arab Emira tes, The Gambia and Norway. In 1990, when sales of his books reached one millión, he retired with his new wife and son to Nairobi.
