Michelangelo, a giant among men, was a genius bearing comparison only with his contemporary and rival Leonardo da Vinci. A sculptor by vocation, he was persuaded into decorating the ceiling of a Pope's chapel and created a masterpiece of the painter's art which is alsó a profound commentary on the predi-cament of man enmeshed between earth and heaven. And this same duality of man's nature he sought to symbolize in his architectural designs. Much has been written about the life and work of Michelangelo; the work has inspired constant curios-ity about the man himself and about the spiritual problems and convictions expressed in his painting and sculpture. But only a few authors have attempted any detailed analysis of his inner vision, for as an artist he is impersonal. His visual works teli us nothing about the man himself or his environment. This impersonal manner of self-expression was usual in Michelangelo's time, but it rarely took so un-equivocal and emphatic a form. Rolf... Tovább

Rolf Schott here gives us a penetrating analysis of this introspective and heaven-aspiring child of the Renaissance, who trusted no one but confided his fears and aspirations to letters ahd poems.
To appr^ciate the greatness of Michelangelo's achieve-ment we must study his wx>rks. In this book are re-producecl the Pietas, Dávid, Aloses, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgement, the Medici tombs, the dome of St Peter's, and many more besides. It provides a sensitive and revealin'g study of the man who can lay claim to be the greatest sculptor, painter and draughtsman who has ever lived, as well as one of the greatest architects and poets. ^ I Vissza
