He was finding his voice and self-confidence, but he would soon lose both. Between June 1941 and May 1944 he found himself unable to write a word. The stories in this book, all written between Sturgeon's marriage in spring 1940 and his departure for Jamaica in late spring 1941, show an author hard at work trying to produce stories that would be acceptable to the one editor (John Campbell of Astounding and Unknown) who made it possible for Sturgeon to support his young family.
