MILLER'S SILVER SHEFFIELD PLATE MARKS
JOHN BLY

Thanks to the unique hallmarking system, it is possible to tell when, where, by whom and with what quality of metal most honest pieces of silver were made. Miller's Silver and Sheffield Plate Marks shows you how to decipher this extraordinary code and to read the history behind the marks.
You may know that the figure of a lion means a piece of silver is "sterling", but what does "sterling" mean? What does the figure of Britannia, or an anchor signify? How do you know if a piece of silver is English, Continental or American?
Miller's Silver and Sheffield Plate Marks shows you all the marks commonly seen on British and Irish silver, gold, platinum, Sheffield plate and electroplate from 1600 to the present day, as well as those seen on Continental and American silver. Hundreds of makers' marks are also included. A special section illustrates the changing styles of silverware to help you date and authenticate pieces. The book also teaches you how to collect and care for silver, and how to spot fakes and altered pieces. An extensive glossary contains all the terms a collector needs to know.
Whether you are a collector, dealer or enthusiast, the handy pocket-sized format of Miller's Silver and Sheffield Plate Marks has been designed to provide you with a practical source of reference, which can be used wherever your collecting takes you.
