In contrast to the great cities of the new century, that of Debrecen in eastern Hungary radiates an air of order, tranquillity and security, as well as being a city of unique character. This individuality can be seen in the images of this album, images depicting seven centuries of history. Brought to life through the marvellous treasures of the Déri Museum and the Museum of the Reformed College is the thriving markét town which gained freedom from the serfdom of its village ancestor, and then the royal free town. Unfolded on these pages is the life story of Hungary's second city. Debrecen is not only a beautiful and incomparable example of its kind, but it is alsó a city with a humán scale. One cannot get lost there - it is comprehensible. It has the experience of age, and yet is youthful. It is at once Hungárián and international. It is both a closed world, and invitingly open. The once small village has carved out a special role for itself. Debrecen's role in the creation and dissemination of cultural values has accompanied it through its seven centuries, and is present to this day in its educational system - one of European renown. Here a multitude of photographs delights the eye with the city's sights, its churches, schools, public buildings, institutions, squares and statues. In presenting the Great Church and the College, this book reveals a colourful storehouse of historic objects. It is clear from these that Debrecen has always played a major role in the turning points of the nation's history. And we can see that, to this day, this rich past draws to Debrecen great figures from international and Hungárián public life, science and the arts, such as Popé John Paul II, Ottó Habsburg, Ede Teller and Samu Benkő. The most important task of this photographic album is to introduce the city, and to show its treasures. A scholarly text provides the former. For the latter, József Hapák has photographed all that the visitor must see to gain a little of the flavour of Debrecen, the Cívis City. Vissza
