Many romantic novelists have imagined a picturesque land nestling under the Car-pathian mountains, in which a true hero can still win his fair love through repeated ordeals by adventure. Supreme among the creators of this imaginary Hungary was Mór Jókai (1825-1904), author of over a hundred volumes of novels and stories, who spiced them with satirical portraits of common aristocratic and bourgeois types. In The Dark Diamonds, Jókai introduced a railway speculation involving an ambi-tious cleric's political plots; the girl from the coal-mine whose beauty conquered the glittering demi-monde of Vienna and Paris but who retains her chastity until the happy ending, which alsó transforms the mining village into a Utópián community working on socialist principles.
