THE RESOLUTION OF CONFLICT Constructive and Destructive Processes by Morton Deutsch Conflict is a natural and inevitable part of our personal and social lives. In this volume Morton Deutsch, the distinguished social psychologist, explores the factors that determine whether the outcome of conflict will be fruitful or destructive. He examines conflict at the intrapsychic, interpersonal, and intergroup levels and formulates meaningful cross-level generalizations about the determinants of conflict resolution. After identifying the differences between competition and cooperation, Deutsch focuses on class conflict and interracial conflict in order to elucidate the condi1 tions that lead to destructive rather than constructive interaction. He provides a theoretical analysis of the role of promises and threats, and trust and suspicion, in determining the course of conflict. He then deseribes a series of ingenious experiments demonstrating the feasibility of investigating, under controlled... Tovább

He then deseribes a series of ingenious experiments demonstrating the feasibility of investigating, under controlled laboratory conditions, the factors that are important to the resolution of conflict. A final section deseribes the typical features of destructive and constructive conflicts and reviews the conditions promoting a cooperative rather than a competitive process of conflict resolution. Here Deutsch provides a detailed discussion of conditions that favor the successful regulation of conflict. He concludes with an extended analysis of the role of third parties in regulating, aborting, or undoing a malignant process of conflict resolution. Morton Deutsch is professor of psychology and education and director of the social psychology laboratory at Teachers College, Columbia University. Carl Hovland Memória! Lectures
The basic question to which this work is addressed is not how to eliminate or prevent conflict but rather how to make it productive, or minimally, how to prevent it from being destructive. I shall not deal with situations of "pure" conflict in which inevitably one side loses what the other gains. My interest is in conflict where there is a mixture of cooperative and competitive interests, where a variety of outcomes is possible: mutual loss, gain for one and loss for the other, and mutual gain. Thus my query can be restated as an investigation of the conditions under which the participants will evolve a cooperative relationship or a competitive relationship in a situation which permits either. -from the Introduction ?B Vissza
