The application of mosaic to a flat or curved surface emerged from the tentative beginnings of the early Christian artists to a height of dramatic intensity in the monumental magnificence of the shimmering, golden mosaic domes of the Byzantine Empire.
In his absorbing introduction and notes to the colour plates, P. B. Hetherington traces the development of mosaics from the austere simplicity of primitive Greek mosaic pavements through the richly pictorial mosaics, laid like carpets on the floors of Roman houses, to the splendours of Byzantium, and the brilliance and virtuosity of the great mosaic schemes of the Italian Renaissance.
