She was related to many of the most prominent families of the city, and included among her friends George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and DeWitt Clinton. A later president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was a collateral descendant. She was married, bore five children, and became a widow at the age of twenty-nine Converted to the Catholic Church from Protestantism, she organized her own religious community of sisters, and is honored as the founder of the Catholic school system in the United States. Her name is Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, and she is the first native-born American to be declared a saint.
