Waking up on Christmas morning after a dull party you don't expect to hear something on the radio that changes your life; news that sends you on a journey into the heart of England in search of a woman you once knew, apparently the latest victim of a sadistic murderer. At first it's enough to work with the police in tracing the killer. But slowly you realise something is wrong: the extensive police investigation, the concerned press-stories and neat little houses stand like a phoney back-drop masking a far worse mystery. Why are the children frightened? How can a small community nurse a hate-obsession with prostitution? And who is terrorising the town's women?
The search for a solution stretches from Britain to Europe and across to America, until the oldest profession leads with a dreadful inevitability to an even older...
