ism and *and A DOUBLEDAY ANCHOR BOOK This volume contains ten essays on logie by Nobel Prize winner Bertrand Russell. Representing the early Writings of one of today's f oremost philosophers, this volume provides the basis for a new twentíeth-century conception of the universe - "the true scientific philosophy." Russell challenges the romantic mysticism that he feels enshrouded most of nineteenth-century thought. He denies the validity of Bergson's "instinct" and Darwin's theory of progressive evolution and decries the egocentríc basis- of both of these theories. He argues for a scientific method as the only rational way of viewing the relationship of man to society, of humán society to its non-human surroundings, and the nature of the nonhuman world itself. ism and *and A DOUBLEDAY ANCHOR BOOK This volume contains ten essays on logie by Nobel Prize winner Bertrand Russell. However, Russell points out, it is necessary in science, too, to strip away the so-called "axioms." Using the basic truth, attained by simple laws of logic, or what the author terms his theory of "logical atomism," he arrives at his balanced and realistic conception of the universe. The reader will find these essays written in a clear, sharp, witty, and often ironic style. They have been divided by the author himself into two parts: the "entirety popular," which includes the well-known title essay, as well as "A Free Man's Worship" and "The Place of Science in a Liberal Education," and the "somewhat more technical" works that deal with specific problems of logic, such as "On the Notion óf Cause" and "Knowledge by Acquaintance and Knowledge by Description."
