Liberal studies cover many matters affecting the lives of both individuals and communities; their importance therefore cannot be overestimated, particularly in the case of young people, who are on the threshold of a full and mature life. But the teaching of these subjects presents many problems and so these two volumes will be very welcome, for they provide excellent solutions, relating particularly to students in senior forms of schools, or in their first years of further éducation. The topics covered include current issues in literature, history, sociology, éducation, philosophy, religion and politics, and the authors' purpose is to stimulate thought and discussion, while providing responsible information on which these can be based. The topics are not presented in a dogmatic, nor in a 'text-book', manner but in a way which places them in correct perspective against their background and history. The contents can be used by teachers in several ways—either literally as given, or in the form of basic information to be presented with the addition of the teacher's own knowledge and experience, or as lines of thought which can then be debated.
